Blithewold 2024 Juror Comments

Eileen McCarney Muldoon - Juror

As a juror for this photographic show, I carefully evaluated each submission based on several key criteria that I believe are essential to impactful and high-quality photography. The following elements were the keys in my choice for the awards:

  1. Quality: I looked for images that exhibited overall excellence, appropriate focus, and careful post-processing that enhanced rather than detracted from the photograph.

  2. Composition: I sought out images with thoughtful composition that guided the viewer's eye.

  3. Technical Acuity: Mastery of photographic techniques was important. This included proper exposure, depth of field control, and effective use of shutter speed to capture or convey motion as appropriate to the subject.

  4. Creativity: I was drawn to images that showed originality in concept, approach, or execution. Photography that pushed boundaries or presented familiar subjects in new and interesting ways stood out.

  5. Lighting: The use of light, whether natural or artificial, was a key factor.

  6. Purpose and Message: Beyond technical proficiency, I sought photographs that conveyed a clear intention or evoked an emotional response. Images that told a story, raised questions, or offered insight into the photographer's vision were highly valued.

In evaluating the submissions, I looked for a balance of these elements. While technical perfection is admirable, it was the combination of skill, vision, and emotional impact that truly set the standout entries apart.

I commend all the participants for their dedication to their art and thank them for sharing their work. The diversity and quality of submissions made the jurying process both challenging and rewarding.
